Felixstowe port expands service after achieving rail freight record

UK'S biggest container facility, the Port of Felixstowe, has introduced a 32nd daily rail freight service by Freightliner, which runs to Rotherham, in South Yorkshire.

The service will transfer to nearby Doncaster when work on a terminal there is completed, reported the Ipswich Star.

"We are delighted to be able to offer an additional rail option," said Felixstowe port CEO and managing director of Hong Kong's HPH Europe Clemence Cheng.

"We have invested heavily in rail infrastructure in recent years which has supported continued growth in sustainable transport," he said.

"In 2015 we handled 936,000 TEU by rail which saved well over 100 million road miles by HGVs [heavy goods vehicles].

"Since then we have continued to break rail throughput records and this new service will help us achieve even greater environmental savings," Mr Cheng said.

Said Freightliner managing director Adam Cunliffe: "This new Freightliner service will create much needed capacity to meet the growing demands of customers who are looking for a faster, greener, safer and more efficient means of transporting freight over land."
