Rotterdam gets big first call/last call boost from 2M re-scheduling

THE 2M alliance, formed by Maersk and the Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), has announced a new Asia-Europe schedule that clearly favours Rotterdam, according to London's Port Technology journal,

The advantage, the journal said, is conveyed with an extra first port of call and last call to the Dutch port, in its loop rotations with its biggest 18,000-TEU ships.

"As a result of the proposed schedule, the Port of Rotterdam Authority expects a substantial increase in 2M container volumes," said Port Technology.

The old schedule had already provided Rotterdam with the important last port of call, has now been doubly served with a last call as well on the important AE10 service, offering the shortest transit time between the Far East and the North West Continent.

The AE10 service is maintained by vessels with a capacity of 18,000 TEU. In the five revised 2M schedules, one service no longer includes Rotterdam.

"This service is maintained by smaller 13,000-TEU vessels. However, this loss is amply compensated for by Rotterdam's improved position in the four other east-west services maintained by the larger ships," said Port Technology.
