Incheon April volume rises 11pc to 223,000 TEU, up 8.3pc since January

KOREA's Port of Incheon posted an 11 per cent year-on-year increase in April to a record high of 223,000 TEU, reports Business Korea.

Incheon Port Authority (IPA) said the accumulated volume until April this year showed an 8.6 per cent growth compared to the same period of last year.

According to the IPA, the import cargo in April increased by 12.3 per cent year on year to stand at 118,919 TEU, accounting for 53.3 per cent of the total cargo volume handled at Incheon.

The export cargo increased to 102,102 TEU, up 10.6 per cent from 9,776 TEU a year earlier. The volume of transshipments came to 1,320 TEU and coastal cargo stood at 785 TEU.

By country, the trade volume with China increased 6.6 per cent or 8,298 TEU year on year to post 133,213 TEU.

The rise was attributed to the increase in imported products from China, including textiles, electronics and their parts and general merchandise.

Vietnamese trade rose 18 per cent in April or by 2,791 TEU year on year to post 18,316 TEU, due to increased investment by Korean manufacturers in Vietnam.

By region, the trade volume with the Far East Region including China and Taiwan increased 8.4 per cent to 160,688 TEU.

Trade volume with the Southeast Asian region rose by 19.5 per cent to 44,133 TEU. But volumes fell with Japan, down 4.5 per cent to 4,910 TEU, and South America, down 12.2 per cent to 1,456 TEU.

Said IPA president Yoo Chang-keun: "If the container cargo traffic continues to grow, the volume handled at Incheon Port will reach 230,000 TEU in November this year."
