UPS to double size of ground sorting facility at San Antonio

UNITED Parcel Service (UPS) has announced plans to nearly double its size at its San Antonio sorting station following similar expansion on the US west coast.

UPS Red River chief Craig Wiltz said population and business growth throughout Texas were the drivers of expansion. When the project is completed in mid-2017, capacity is expected to grow 200 per cent.

The facility will grow to more than 30,658 square metres, up from its today's 15,886 square metres, reports New York's Air Cargo World.

The expanded sorting centre will support 340 delivery vehicles, up from 150. UPS will also upgrade scanning systems with six-sided decode tunnels, which obtain information from address labels with greater efficiency.

UPS said it also plans to replace up to 40 diesel tractors with more environmentally friendly compressed natural gas (CNG) tractors. Each of the new tractors, which will be fuelled by an on-site CNG fuelling station, will displace 25,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year with clean-burning natural gas.
