Port of Odessa sees 15pc increase in box volume at 112,931 TEU
ODESSA in Ukraine handled 112,931 TEU in the first quarter, representing an increase of 15 per cent compared to the same period a year earlier.
However, the port's total cargo traffic fell 5.7 per cent year on year to 6.15 million tonnes over the reporting period, said Gdynia's Baltic Transport Journal.
In the first quarter Odessa's general cargo handlings amounted to 3.33 million tonnes, up 14.7 per cent year on year, of which containerised freight totalled 1.60 million tonnes (+18.5 per cent), followed by rolled metal at 1.33 million tonnes (minus 10.5 per cent) and cast iron at 137,000 tonnes, which was 27 times more than in the first quarter of 2015.
Dry bulk also rose over the reporting period by six per cent to 2.32 million tonnes.
