Swissport obtains ISAGO to operate at two airports in Tanzania
GLOBAL ground handler Swissport, has attained IATA certification for safe ground operations (ISAGO), to operate at Tanzania's two main international airport stations in Tanzania, Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) and Kilimanjaro International Airport between Arusha and Moshi.
A new US$13 million air cargo terminal in Dar es Salaam is due to open next month with state-of-the-art cargo handling, reported Global Travel Industry News of Newport Beach, California.
This news, however, has been overshadowed by the drop in cargo handling during the first quarter of 2016, when the company apparently missed its own growth forecast.
Nonetheless, Swissport has stepped up improvements in its export and import facilities to boost performance in Tanzanian aviation by putting up an import warehouse valued at US$13 million, reports Kampala's East African Business Week.
"Growth in Tanzanian aviation will just be a pipe dream in the absence of reliable export and import aviation service providers," said Swissport chief Gaudence Temu.
Swissport provides services to some airlines ATCL, Egypt Air, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, EWA Air, Fly Dubai, Kenya Airways, and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Others are, LAM-Linhas Aereas de Mocambique, Malawian Airlines, Oman Air, Qatar Airways, Rwandair Express, South African Airways (SAA), Swiss International Air Lines, and Turkish Airlines.
Last year, Swissport handled 18,000 tonnes of air cargo. The new cargo terminal will be able to handle 80,000 tonnes a year at full build out.
However, in the first quarter, cargo volume shrank by seven per cent from last year's 5,252 tonnes to 4,866 tonnes, a 23 per cent drop on its Q1 target for 2016.
No specific reasons for the sharp reduction of air cargo handling could be obtained as the Tanzanian economy overall continued to grow.
