Sri Lankan shipping ministry stresses importance of women's participation

THE Asian Shipping Conference organised by the Women's International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) and the Ceylon Association of Shipping Agents (CASA) drew a diverse group at its recent Colombo conference.

The Asia Shipping Conference 2016, entitled "Emerging Trends in Shipping and Logistics - Asia, was held under the auspices of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Harsha de Silva.

Dr de Silva said that Sri Lanka had become one of the most protectionist economies in the world.

"Yet we have been marketing ourselves as one of the most open economies in the world," he said.

The conference served as an impacting arena for the shipping and trading industry, also encouraging women to take up roles in the industry.

"It was very nice to see the ladies getting involved in shipping industry." said the Ports and Shipping Minister Arjuna Ranatunga.

WISTA was formed to get all the women in this country involved  and introduce shipping to women. And they should take these concepts to the villages and incorporate these village ladies into the system and take the country to the next level.
