Ocean Alliance set to be biggest in Asia-Europe and transpacific trades

THE proposed Ocean Alliance to be established by CMA CGM, APL, Cosco, China Shipping, Evergreen and OOCL, will be the largest alliance on the East-West trades from Asia to Europe and Asia to North America, according Alphaliner.

It is estimated that the shipping alliance would control 34.5 per cent on total capacity on the Asia-Europe trade lane, versus Maersk and MSC's 2M alliance capacity of 33.4 per cent, and the remaining shipping lines in a number of different alliances in the trade would control the remaining 32.1 per cent of capacity.

On the Asia to North America trade the Ocean Alliance will be the largest single grouping with 38.9 per cent of capacity, while 2M has just 15.6 per cent.

Comparing 2M and the Ocean Alliance, the former would operate 2.12 million TEU jointly while the new alliance would operate 2.78 million TEU in capacity jointly.
