Muscat air cargo bucks trend, up 7pc in first quarter to 34.7 million kilos

MUSCAT International Airport first quarter cargo volume grew seven per cent year on year to 34,759,792 kilogrammes, despite weakening air cargo demand globally. 

Oman Air and Cargolux extended their partnership in February to cover twice weekly operations to Mumbai. The two carriers have been operating in a partnership from Chennai to Muscat connecting further on to Luxemburg since 2015.



The traffic growth in Muscat International Airport in March was 20 per cent reaching 812,438 passengers (cumulative growth percentage January-March 20 per cent reaching nearly 2.5 million passengers).



Muscat Airport's transfer traffic grew fastest by 40 per cent in March and by 37 per cent during first quarter respectively representing over 40 per cent of total traffic. 



Additionally, flight movements increased double digits, Muscat International Airport by 10 per cent in March and by 11 per cent during the first quarter representing 8,458 movements in March and 24,698 movements in the period respectively. 



During the first three months, Jet Airways started to operate between Delhi and Muscat, Shaheen started on a route between Islamabad and Muscat as well as new airline Regent Airways started to between Dhaka/ Chittagong and Muscat operating four times a week.
