Beijing think tank urges Chinese leadership to embrace TPP, not oppose it

AFTER years of efforts to counter the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and build an alternative trading bloc, China is now considering joining the US-sponsored regime.

"I think it does not make sense to have a world divided by different trading blocs," said Wang Huiyao, president of Centre for China & Globalisation (CCG).

The Centre for China and Globalisation (CCG) is an independent, non-profit think tank based in Beijing. CCG conducts research in a range of social science areas including world affairs, international talent issues, sustainable development, entrepreneurship and globalisation.

Founded by a number of returned scholars from the west together with the Policy Advisory Committee of the China Western Returned Scholars Association (WRSA), CCG aims to utilise its "pool of first-class scholars, business leaders and experts in government, to address issues on how best to position China in a globalised world", said Wikipedia.

Said Mr Wang: "The US should join the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and China should become part of the TPP. The two sides should stop creating trade bottlenecks and join hands for the expansion of free trade," Mr Wang told Voice of America.

He added that both China and the US have a lot to gain if they worked within one trade regime. At present, 12 countries have agreed to join the TPP.
