Panama starts taking reservations for widened canal from July 27
THE Panama Canal has started accepting transit reservations for neo-panamax vessels that will transit the expanded Canal from June 27 onwards - the scheduled date of the inauguration of the expanded locks.
In light of this, the Panama Canal Authority said it will offer four extra slots per day for vessels of this size, in addition to the existing 25 slots.
The first reservation was granted to a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker, Linden Pride, operated by NYK Line and represented by shipping agent Norton Lilly International (Panama) SA. The vessel has a length of 755 feet and beam of 121 foot.
"Today marks an important day in canal history because the reservation system is now opened for Neopanamax ships that will start using the new lane starting June 27," Panama Canal administrator Jorge Quijano said in a statement.
