Antwerp's first quarter box traffic rises 4.6pc to 2.5 million TEU
THE Port of Antwerp handled during the first quarter 2.5 million TEU, an increase of terms of 4.6 per cent against the same period a year earlier.
During this period the port handled 53.3 million tons of cargo, up 3.9 per cent.
Dry bulk volumes for the quarter fell by 17.9 per cent to 2.9 million tons, which port authorities attributed to coal volumes plummeting 81.1 per cent year on year to 69,975 tons.
"The planned conversion of the coal-fired power station in Langerlo (Belgium) weighed heavily on the result, but ports in general where coal is stored are faced with falling imports and declining stocks," the port was cited as saying.
