New Zealand up in arms over plans to house ex-cons in containers

PLANS to house former prisoners in six shipping containers owned by the Salvation Army has been met by alarm by residents of Faraday Street, Napier, New Zealand.

The containers have occupied the spot for eight years near the city centre (pop 60,000), but are likely to be inhabited for the first time later this year, reported Wellington's Dominion Post.

Salvation Army Napier corps officer Alister Irwin said one container would house a staff member and the other five would house people coming from Napier's Springhill Treatment Centre after they had completed a 10-week addiction treatment programme. They would stay for one to four weeks.

"These people will be police checked, and only be placed with us if they are no danger to the community, our staff, the other residents and themselves," Mr Irwin said.

A spokeswoman for the residents, who would not be named, said 18 young children lived very near the site and 60 children from four different schools walked along the street to get to and from school.
