Rhode Island's only big port generates jobs and millions in taxes
MORE than 75 companies rely on Quonset's Port of Davisville to put US$97 million in annual earnings into the pockets of citizen of America's smallest state Rhode Island, reports the American Journal of Transportation.
At the same time, $27 million in state and local taxes is generated by the Port along with 1,500 direct, indirect and induced jobs.
Those are just some of the highlights of testimony before the House Finance Committee by Steven King, managing director of the Quonset Development Corporation.
The committee heard from Mr King and other port users about the benefits of Democratic Governor Gina Marie Raimondo's $90 million modernisation plan for Pier 2 at the Port of Davisville. The proposal was introduced as part of her budget earlier this year for America's smallest state.
The proposal would support the modernisation of Pier 2, built in 1956 with a design life of 50 years. The plan will re-configure the Port for additional growth and provide more berthing capacity so other shippers can be pursued to call at the facility. It will also allow Davisville to stay competitive with other ports in the region.
