Taiwan's Port of Kaohsiung docks its first 18,000-TEUer
THE port of Kaohsiung in Taiwan has docked the 18,000-TEU, CMA CGM's Benjamin Franklin, and event that shattered records of 14,000 TEU ships in years gone by.
Taiwan International Ports Corporation president Lee Tai-hsin, said the largest mega ships docking in Kaohsiung before were 368-metres long and 51-metres wide. They are dwarfed by the Benjamin Franklin's length of 399 metres and width of 54 metres.
He said that to pilot the vessel into Kaohsiung port has required his company to coordinate with other agencies, as well as the Taiwan branch of the French shipowner, reported China News Agency.
The Benjamin Franklin is deployed on a west America routing that includes port calls in Hong Kong, Shenzhen-Yantian, Kaohsiung, Long Beach and Auckland.
Mr Lee added there are currently 37 containerships with a capacity of 18,000 TEU+ serving the sector.
