OOCL's Long Beach Container Terminal moves to greater automation.
LONG BEACH's highly automated Middle Harbour facility will get a work out with the arrival of the 7,700-TEU OOCL Long Beach at Pier E where the terminal will use some of the world's most advanced robotics, reported Lloyd's Loading List.
Such techniques are rare in US container ports, although the TraPac terminal in nearby Los Angeles has introduced automation. OOCL and Long Beach Container Terminal signed a 40-year US$4.6 billion lease with the Port of Long Beach in 2012.
Long Beach port is investing $1.2 billion to develop the 300-acre site, while OOCL and LBCT are spending $500 million on cargo-handling equipment.
The new terminal will eventually be able to handle more than three million TEU a year.
It combines two older berths, Pier F and Pier E, into one terminal that will triple capacity from the current one million TEU. LBCT has occupied Pier F since 1986 and is now the tenant for the enlarged facility.
The whole project is due to be completed by 2019 with phase adding 10 per cent more capacity and an ability to handle 18,000-TEUers. Another Long Beach terminal, Pier J, recently received the 18,000 TEU CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin.
No official opening is planned at this stage, with the terminal wanting to thoroughly check equipment and processes first, Containerisation International understands.
