Box weigh-in rule timing very bad - just as peak season opens: J&J
BENEFICIAL cargo owner Johnson & Johnson, a US medical and pharma product giant, has railed against the imposition of the UN's compulsory container weigh-in rule on July 1.
Speaking at the Port of Long Beach's annual Pulse of the Ports Peak Season Forecast, Lori Smith, a sourcing lead for ocean transportation at J&J, said the timing of implementation for the new Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) treaty is a growing concern for shippers.
The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) rule is due to go into effect just as the shipping industry moves into what is traditionally its busiest time of year, she said reported American Shipper.
"How is that going to affect productivity? What's going to happen when SOLAS starts July 1?" she said.
"July, that's a peak season month. I think all of us have to worry - is that going slow productivity more, is that going hamper the supply chain?"
Ms Smith, one of several speakers at the annual forum, said reliability is a key focus for Johnson & Johnson as a shipper, and that the container weight regulation was one of just many challenges facing beneficial cargo owners.
