CMA CGM launches WEMED service dedicated to intra-Mediterranean trades
FRENCH shipping giant CMA CGM has announced the launch of its first service dedicated to intra Mediterranean trades, said a company statement.
The WEMED service (West Med-East Med) was launched on March 11 and offers direct transport to eastern Mediterranean countries of France, Spain and Algeria as well as and Western Mediterranean countries of Turkey, Lebanon and Egypt.
"The WEMED line is the first and only CMA CGM service to be fully dedicated to Mediterranean countries," said the company statement.
It directly links east Med via Malta, a CMA CGM major hub, which offers transshipment connections towards worldwide markets.
This new service answers the area's growing commercial exchanges - Turkey being a major economic partner for Mediterranean countries - and strengthens CMA CGM presence on its traditional market.
Transit times offered from southern Europe to east Mediterranean Sea are among the best on the market: Turkey is linked in seven days from Valencia, and nine days from Marseilles.
The WEMED line offers the only direct and weekly connection from Mersin, Istanbul, Beirut and Alexandria to Algiers, said the company.
Four 1,200 to 1,700 TEU-capacity vessels are deployed on this new line rotating through Marseilles, Barcelona, Valencia, Malta, Mersin, Iskenderun, Beirut, Alexandria, Malta, Algiers and back to Marseilles.
