CSX rail cuts 101 Kentucky jobs as federal regulators cut coal use
CSX RAILWAY has laid 101 workers at the railyard and mechanical facilities in Russell, Kentucky because of the slump in coal volumes, reports The Associated Press.
The Jacksonville, CSX Corp has closed administrative offices in Huntington, West Virginia, in January, and last fall shuttered a mechanical shop in Corbin, Kentucky. and reduced train operations in Erwin, Tennessee.
Volumes of coal have tumbled in recent years due to federal clean air regulations and falling natural gas prices, causing CSX's coal revenues to decline US$1.4 billion in the last four years alone.
