Deutsche Bahn 2015 profit falls 16.6pc to US$392.7 million, sales rise 1.9pc
GERMAN railway Deutsche Bahn (DB) posted a 16.6 per cent year on year decline in operating profit to EUR350 million (US$392.7 million) in 2015, drawn on revenues of EUR40.5 billion, an increase of 1.9 per cent.
"As happy as we are with these positive developments, we did not achieve the targets we set," conceded DB chief executive Rudiger Grube at the annual results press conference in Berlin.
"Our earnings were down year on year, due in part to the strikes we faced. We need to make improvements, and that is why we launched our 'Zukunft Bahn' [future of rail operations in Germany] to raise quality in a noticeable way and return to economic success," Dr Grube said.
In the rail freight sector, DB's volume fell by 4.3 per cent year on year, to 98.4 billion tonne kilometres.
Business at DB Schenker saw a positive trend, with the number of European land transport consignments up 2.9 per cent and air freight volumes up 1.4 per cent.
Contract logistics again saw a strong increase in revenues of some 17 per cent. Only ocean freight saw lower volumes, with a drop of 2.1 per cent.
German rail traffic rose once again in 2015, with a one per cent increase in the volume produced. Operators outside the DB Group saw their market share rise to 27.5 per cent (following 25 per cent in the year prior) ?testimony to the effectiveness of competition in the rail transport market.
