American Airlines Cargo expands cold chain facilities worldwide
AMERICAN Airlines Cargo is expanding and upgrading its global network of temperature-controlled facilities in support of the increasing demand for pharmaceutical and perishable goods worldwide.
Most recent facility improvements include those in both San Juan (SJU) and Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), which see some of the highest demand for time- and temperature-sensitive goods, said a company statement.
From fresh fruit and meat to life-saving medications, the safe and timely transport of pharmaceutical and perishable cargo remains a top priority for American's Cargo operation," it said.
As demand for these goods continues to grow worldwide, investing in and improving on current infrastructures will also continue, said a company statement.
Said cold chain customer Chris Connell, president of Commodity Forwarders Inc: "Being able to provide an expanded cooler network during those warm Texas months gives us peace of mind when we route via their Dallas hub."
This new drive-through perishable facility is 4,000 square feet, which is an addition to the current 1,800-square foot perishable and 800-square foot pharma coolers at the DFW hub.
American has also invested in the expansion of its cold chain network with a new 600-square foot space in SJU梑ringing total cooler space to 1,000 square feet at this location.
On average, the pharmaceutical market is growing at a rate of 6.5 per cent a year, leading to a need for pharmaceutical logistics and regulations.
The most common commodities that move into and out of San Juan include over-the-counter and prescription medicine and active pharmaceutical ingredients.
"Having the ability to store pharmaceuticals will allow us to offer opportunities into and through San Juan," said regional cargo sales chief Russell Santiago.
"Over the last couple years, we've seen an increase in cold chain traffic into our station, which is consistent with growing market trends and an important sector in the air freight industry," he said.
American Airlines and American Eagle offer 6,700 flights a day to 350 destinations in more than 50 countries.
