US DOT mulls 8 pleas from US airlines for Cuban services with air cargo
THE Airforwarders Association, representing 360 companies, is calling on the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to assign routes to US passenger airlines that currently offer air cargo services.
The call comes as DOT has accepted applications from eight US carriers petitioning to provide passenger service to Cuba.
Of those, only five operate cargo programmes, namely, Southwest Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines and Alaska Airlines.
"The opening of Cuba to travel is about more than just moving people, it will also be about trade," said Airforwarders Association executive director Brandon Fried, reports UK freightnet.
"The eligibility of any airline that ultimately cannot fill planes with both passengers and cargo should be looked upon less favourably," he said.
To facilitate the expansion of air cargo services, significant airport infrastructure and economic limitations within Cuba will need to be addressed first.
