Antwerp sets 15.65-metre draught record docking 15,500-TEUer
THE Port of Antwerp has reached a new milestone after a visit by the 15,500-TEU Eleonara Maersk mega-ship set a record draught of 15.65 metres, breaking last month's record of 15.5 metres at the port.
The containership is deployed on the AE2 service operated by the 2M shipping alliance between Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), linking the Far East and Europe.
The ship set sail from the Malaysian Port of Tanjung Pelepas and was originally scheduled to unload cargo in Tangiers and Southampton first. However, in order to make up for a delay at Suez it sailed directly to Antwerp, reported London's Port Technology.
At the Deurganck dock, where the ship was moored, 5,000 container movements were carried out, including 4,300 unloading operations.
