Asia Pacific Airlines' cargo plane makes emergency landing in Guam
AN Asia Pacific Airlines' Boeing 727-212 cargo plane on a training flight from Guam was forced to make an emergency landing at the AB Won Pat International Airport after sending out a distress call about the aircraft's landing gear.
According to airport marketing administrator, Rolenda Faasuamalie, the landing gear failed to come down and the aircraft's pilots decided to employ a touch-and-go-landing, reported Guam Daily Post.
Such manoeuvres involve landing on a runway and taking off again without coming to a full stop, circuiting the field and landing again in hope of a better outcome.
In preparation for the distressed aircraft, roadways were closed off and the Airport Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (AARF) division was on standby at the runway. Officials from Guam's fire and police departments were also called to help the airport as an added precaution, but the aircraft managed to make a successful emergency landing.
The aircraft departed from Guam at 1:08 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Pohnpei at 4:20 p.m. It was then expected to depart Pohnpei at 5:20 p.m. for Chuuk.
