Latin American air carriers cargo falls 8.2pc in 2015 to 4.7 billion FTK
THE 11 members of the Latin American & Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) posted an 8.2 per cent year-on-year per cent decline in cargo in 2015 to 4.7 billion freight tonne kilometres.
The biggest decline came from within the region, down 8.8 per cent, while intra-Latin American service fell seven per cent, reported London's Air Cargo News. December demand slipped 17.6 per cent.
The declines come as major economies in the region continue to struggle. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is expecting Brazilian GDP to fall three per cent and Argentina's to grow 0.4 per cent.
Figures from the global International Air Transport Association (IATA) show a decline for the year of six per cent.
Said IATA: "Latin American carriers recorded the biggest fall among regions. With economic and political conditions in key economy Brazil worsening, regional trade has been volatile.
"That said, air freight demand on carriers in this region has shown little correlation with trade to/from the region," said IATA.
ALTA member include Aerol韓eas Argentinas (includes Austral), Aeromar, AeroM閤ico, AeroMexico Connect, Avianca, Copa Airlines, Copa Airlines Colombia, GOL, Insel Air, LATAM Airlines Group, and Volaris.
