Pirates seize and release Maersk 2,500-TEU ship off Nigeria
THE Maersk-owned 2,500-TEU Safmarine Kuramo was briefly seized by pirates off the Nigerian coast recently, but released the next day, said a Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) release.
The hijacking incident took place when the vessel was sailing from Pointe Noire, Congo-Brazzaville to Port Onne, Nigeria.
According to the MPA, Nigerian authorities secured the release of the vessel in the early hours of Saturday, February 6. The crew consisted of nationals from South Africa, the Philippines, India, Thailand and the UK.
No word on what the pirates had taken, if anything, or whether ransom was paid. No one was hurt in the incident.
