Mega-ships up Colombo's 2015 box volume 5.7pc to 5.18 million TEU
COLOMBO International Container Terminals (CICT), a joint venture company between Hong Kong's China Merchants and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), handled a record 1.56 million TEU in 2015 increasing 2015 year-on-year volume by 3.6 per cent.
Buoyed by CICT's strong performance, Colombo port handled a total of 5.18 million TEU last year, an increase of 5.7 per cent over the previous year.
Sixty-seven per cent of this traffic was carried on mega-ships deployed on the Asia-Europe trade lane.
Mega ship arrivals included the likes of the 16,652-TEU MSC New York, 16,020-TEU CMA CGM Marco Polo and Maersk's 14,770 TEU ships. CICT is currently the only deep water terminal in South Asia equipped with facilities to handle such vessels, reported The Dubai Maritime Standard.
