Passage of whale off Georgia closes channel to US Navy and shipping
THE shipping channel was closed to the US Navy, commercial ships, recreational boating to accommodate the passage of a whale and her calf, reports the Jacksonville Times-Union.
The endangered right whale, so named because it was the right whale to harvest in the days of commercial whaling, was spotted off St Simons Island, Georgia, with a calf.
In a tweet from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration抯 (NOAA) Southeast Fisheries Office, said mother was six years old and "this is her first known calf".
NOAA spokeswoman Allison Garrett said the mother was the same whale that came into the Jacksonville shipping channel in January 2011.
There are 500 right whales alive today and researchers can spot individuals by the distinctive pattern of callosities, or raised tissue, on the top of their heads.
They feed in coastal habitats off New England and Canada and their calving grounds are the shallow waters off the southeastern US.
