India must be more port centric to catch up to China: port manager
THE development of port and hinterland instrastructure will contribute greatly to the GDP of the east coast of India, says Krishnapatnam port CEO Anil Yendluri.
Speaking to faculty and students at Gitam School of International Business, Mr Yendluri said India has much catching up to do, reported the Times of India.
He said ports in China can handle 30 million TEU, while Indian ports have the capacity to handle nine million TEU.
In layman's language, he said one addition of truck on road will create five jobs.
Mr Yendluri said China's strategy was sea-based and port-based. He said that a port can add forex income to a country, and added that the common infrastructure can be infrastructure for development of industry in that region also.
Currently, west coast Gujarat and Maharashtra are enjoying the fruits of having ports for many years and now east coast Andhra Pradesh is inching close to the growth of Maharashtra and will become the second fastest growing state in the immediate future, he said.
He also elaborated on the advantages of implementing a single window clearance for the larger benefit of exporters and importers.
Andhra Pradesh region has started developing many products for exports such as maize and other processed agro-based products from this region, he said.
