Railway pensioners stage protest in Harbin over short pension payments
MORE than 1,000 Chinese railway pensioners in Harbin have risen in protest over two days because of low pension payouts, reports Caixin Online.
The pensioners and workers in their 50s gathered in front of the Harbin Railway Bureau on January 25 and 26, holding banners and placards that displayed the names of their employers, all subsidiaries of the railway bureau.
One pensioner who participated said the protest started because workers found out that their employers did not make required payments to their pension plans from 1986 to 1994.
As a result, pensioners received CNY1,500 (US228.20) a month, half of what they were supposed to get, said the man, who asked not to be named.
The protesters demanded that the bureau make up the difference. They also asked for other benefits, such as an extra annual allowance of several hundred yuan to cover winter heating that have not been paid in years.
Police were present at the demonstration, but it was peaceful, the man said. Several representatives of the protesters were allowed to enter the bureau to meet railway officials on January 27, but no agreement was reached.
