Sale of Southern Air to Atlas likely to bring more cargo traffic to Kentucky

CINCINNATI/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) is expected to handle more cargo traffic once the acquisition of Florence, Kentucky-based Southern Air Holdings Inc for US$110 million by Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings is wrapped up over the next few months, pending regulatory approval.

Southern Air will continue to operate from its Turfway Ridge Office Park location in Florence, officials said, where it is close its main customer, DHL. The airline employs 400 staff in Kentucky and at its other global locations.

The acquisition of Southern Air would be "very good for CVG", the airport's CEO Candace McGraw was quoted as saying in a report by ABC News Cincinnati. "Atlas has indicted that they intend to grow their presence here," Ms McGraw said.

Southern Air, which has entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy, provides long-term aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance cargo services. It recently signed a new, 10-year contract extension with DHL. The carrier operates five Boeing 777-200 freighters and five 737-400Fs under agreements with DHL.
