Slowdown in box traffic to hit freight stations at JNPT port

THE 30 container freight stations at India's top container port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) that have a combined holding capacity of 2.8 million TEU are expected to be adversely impacted by the slowdown in global box traffic.

These container freight stations are likely to be affected in terms of utilisation levels and yields until the fourth container terminal is operational by 2017-18, reported The Hindu.

"Container traffic and volumes have steadily declined over the last year or so, mainly on account of a global slowdown," said Mumbai-Nhava Sheva Ship Agents Association president Vivek Anand.

"The weakening rupee has impacted imports. CFS utilisation has fallen in the range of 40-50 per cent and a certain part of this could be attributed to excessive capacity being created. This has led to a price war and a corresponding drop in yields," he said.

A report by Dolat Capital on the second quarter earnings of Gateway Distriparks, which operates two CFSs in JNPT, stated: "The volumes declined mainly on account of lower throughputs handling at JNPT (-5.4 per cent year on year). Increased competition coupled with acute capacity shortage at JNPT were the key factors for a decline in volumes at JNPT CFS."
