World cargo safety group meets in Barcelona from February 29 to March 2
THE International Cargo Handling and Coordination Association, a freight safety group, will hold its annual conference at the World Trade Centre in Barcelona from February 29 to March 2.
Following the theme of "Bigger Ships, Greater Challenges" conference delegates will focus on the growing problems of global cargo operations concentrating on safety, security and efficiency in the era of scale.
Among the speakers from the UN's International Maritime Organisation (IMO) will be Ki-tack Lim, secretary general-elect as keynoter as well as Joseph Westwood-Booth, senior deputy director of marine technology and safety.
Other speakers include Uffe Ernst-Frederiksen, head of Cargo Management for Maersk Line and chairman of the intra-liner Board for the Cargo Incident Notification System (CINS); Santiago Garcia Mila, deputy executive director, Port of Barcelona, also president, International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) and chairman, European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO); Chris Welsh, secretary general, Global Shippers Forum; Kimihiko Endou, director, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT).
Topics to be discussed will include dangerous goods management and incident response, strategies for the big ship era, container weighing, packing and securing - new rules, new realities, global maritime cargo operations, risks, responsibilities and responses, improving safety, security and efficiency in container operations, bigger ships, greater challenges and best practices in safe container operations, operational best practice for safe, secure and efficient maritime trade.
