Move migrant camp away from Port of Calais, urges Freight Transport Association
BRITAIN's Freight Transport Association (FTA) expressed impatience at the French government's failure to deal with mobs of migrants at Calais harassing truckers going to England.
The FTA comments came with news that a planned rail freight service between the Pyrenees and Calais has been shelved over migrant security fearS, reports Lloyd's Loading List.
Calais situation 'cannot be allowed to continue to adversely affect the livelihoods of transport operators", Freight Transport Association insists.
The new rail service would use a section of track running close to the Jungle Camp, with trains travelling at less than 12 mph as they approach the port. But because migrants' presence, the rail service as been shelved.
"The French government needs to move the camp away from the port as soon as possible and ensure the area is secure for transport operators," said FTA European manager Chris Yarsley.
"Our members have endured months of delays, disruptions and threats to their personal safety while travelling through Calais. This situation cannot be allowed to continue," he said.
