Lufthansa Cargo still top EU carrier in 2015, despite 2.4pc fall in tonnage
LUFTHANSA Cargo still tops the rankings of European air cargo carriers in 2015 despite the withdrawal of two of its freighters and having its tonnage fall 2.4 per cent year on year, reports IHS Media.
Volume was down 3.8 per cent in December year on year to 125,000 tonnes on a one per cent increase in capacity that resulted in a 3.4 per centage points drop in the load factor to 67.4 per cent.
Lufthansa Cargo is set to post its first annual loss in six years in 2015 after falling EUR90 million (US$97 million) into debt in the second and third quarters of the year.
The German carrier transported 1.63 million tonnes of freight last year, though not enough to fill a per cent increase in capacity that led to a 3.4 per centage point decline in the load factor to 66.3 per cent.
揕ast year was not an easy one for the air freight industry," said Lufthansa Cargo CEO Peter Gerber.
揟urbulence in the Chinese market and the strong US dollar, that affected a lot of industries, stretched us all to our limits," he said.
Strikes by Lufthansa pilots and cabin crew also weighed heavily on the carrier抯 cargo business, Mr Gerber said.
Despite the difficult market conditions, Lufthansa Cargo boosted its network through 2015, adding new destinations including Turkmenistan, Vietnam and Brazil to its flight schedules.
Two more MD-11 freighters are being withdrawn from the fleet in a bid to increase load factors on five new Boeing 777Fs and twelve MD-11Fs and eight 777Fs operated by Aerologic, Lufthansa抯 joint venture with DHL Express.
