Lufthansa Cargo posts 2.4pc decline in 2015's freight and mail volume
GERMANY's Lufthansa Cargo carried 1.6 million tonnes of freight and mail in 2015, representing a decrease of 2.4 per cent compared to the previous year, while freight tonne kilometres (FTK) were down 2.9 per cent to 8.4 billion.
The load factor dropped by 3.4 percentage points to 66.3 per cent after the airline raised available capacity by two per cent over the course of the year.
"Last year was not an easy one for the air freight industry," said CEO Peter Gerber. "Turbulence in the Chinese market and the strong US dollar, that affected a lot of industries, stretched us all to our limits.
"Strikes called by the Vereinigung Cockpit pilots' union and the cabin crew union UFO also weighed heavily on us at Lufthansa Cargo," he said.
To improve utilisation on the freighter routes, the Lufthansa subsidiary is withdrawing two MD-11 freighters from its fleet. The airline will have five new Boeing 777 freighters as well as twelve MD-11Fs in its fleet, reported London's Air Cargo News.
