Beijing to spend US$460 billion on new railways over next 5 years
CHINA's National Railway Administration will spend CNY3 trillion (US$460 billion) on railways and CNY800 billion upgrading trains over the next five years, Caixin reports, citing a document from the administration.
Beijing plans to build 30,000 kilometres of new track over five years, the plan says, in order to develop a national passenger network that links China's cities with populations of more than 200,000 people by 2020.
The plan includes 44 bullet train lines some 5,000 kilometres in length meant to connect populous regions, with priority going to the economic hubs of Beijing, Tianjin and neighbouring Hebei province, the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta.
