Japan's Nippon Express sets up 2nd subsidiary in Myanmar
JAPANESE forwarder Nippon Express has a new subsidiary near the Burmese capital of Yangon, called Nittsu Logistics Myanmar Co after setting up Nippon Express (Myanmar) in Yangon a year ago.
The logistics services provided by Nittsu Logistics Myanmar will include sea and air freight forwarding, customs clearance, domestic transportation, warehousing and moving services.
There are plans are to build a new 56,800-square foot logistics warehouse on the site by 2017, reported Atlanta area Air Cargo World.
Nippon Express is one of the pioneers of the Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ), started in September outside of Yangon as a joint project between the governments of Myanmar and Japan to foster trade.
Established to foster trade with southeast Asia and Japan, it now has 47 companies from 13 countries opening up shop in the Thilwa SEZ.
Nippon Express said it also set up a cross-border network between Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand in preparation for the new US$2.3 trillion common market, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Economic Community (AEC), which formally starts this month.
"The Nippon Express Group will further expand its logistics network linking Myanmar to other ASEAN member countries to meet demand for logistics services, which is expected to grow further after the creation of the AEC," the company said.
