Calais mayor makes plea for army control of riotous mass of migrants

CALAIS Mayor Natacha Bouchart has renewed appeal to the French government to bring in troops to protect the town from growing masses of riotous migrants seeking passage to England.

Hundreds of migrants left the camp in Calais known as "The Jungle", in what turned out to be a vain attempt to gain access to Euro tunnel抯 French terminal, reported Lloyd's Loading List.

But their numbers brought to traffic to standstill on the motorway leading to the terminal for about an hour.

Said Mayor Bouchart said: "Only the army has the capacity to protect the perimeter of the camp and prevent migrants from leaving it en masse, invading the ring road and creating public disorder and disrupting everyday life in Calais."

Britain's Road Haulage Association (RHA) renewed its call for the deployment of the French troops to restore law and order in and around the port of Calais.

Said RHA chief executive Richard Burnett: "Despite the fact that there are 1,300 security operatives deployed at Calais [CRS riot police and gendarmes), we are concerned that this is not enough to handle the ever increasing number of migrants who are honing in on the port to attempt the crossing to the UK on the back of a truck."
