KL relief aid for flood victims held up by Tamil Nadu customs red tape
CUSTOMS officials at Tiruchi International Airport in India's Tamil Nadu state are refusing to release 1.5 tonnes of relief aid because it lacks proper documents, reports the Hindu of Chennai.
The relief materials packed in 95 boxes include dry food, rice, sugar, spices and soaps. They were transported onboard a Malindo Air flight from Kuala Lumpur and reached Tiruchi on December 25.
The materials were sent by People's Foundation, a non-governmental organisation in Malaysia. whose chief M Prakash said the consignment was cleared in Malaysia after being scanned and the carrier airlifted the cargo free of charge.
Customs officials at Tiruchi airport said the consignment did not have any relevant supporting documents which were essential to ensure the genuineness and prevent misuse. There was no invoice, no airways bill, no packing list and no details pertaining to the weight and value of each item, a senior official said.
Instead of being booked as air cargo, the consignment was brought in as "rush luggage". Further, the bill of entry for the consignment for clearing it as cargo with supporting documents had not been filed by the consignee.
