New US$7.4 billion Doha port set for first calls in early 2016

QATAR's new Doha Port Project (DPP), to be open by the end of 2016, is set to receive its first ro-ro vessel at the Early Operations Terminal - set up on at Container Terminal 3 this month.

Port officials told Seatrade Maritime News last week, that it was the first ro-ro vessel to arrive December 18, initially ro-ros and livestock it will relocate from the existing Doha Port in the city centre from January.



Major excavation works for the new port and flooding of the basin was completed in July, with a total of 12 ship-to-shore cranes manufactured by ZPMC in Shanghai arrived last summer.



The new Hamad Port, located 25 kilometres from Doha, involves three main elements: a new container port with three terminals (CT1,2 and 3), a special economic zone and a naval base.



The US$7.4 billion project - described as the world's largest greenfield port development - forms a vital component of Qatar's plans to prepare for the FIFA World Cup in 2022,



The entry gates are nearing completion and a soft opening is planned for next summer, paving the way for the start of full operations in December next year. Capacity will initially be two million TEU, expanding to six million TEU by 2020.



The Um Al Houl Special Economic Zone, will cover some 33.5 square kilometres and cater to industries such as petrochemicals, logistics and manufacturing.
