Chinese firm to design and build Atlantic Canada container terminal

CANADA's Harbour-Port Development Partners (HPDP) and port engineering firm, China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) are to collaborate on the development of a proposed container terminal in Nova Scotia's Port of Sydney.

Under the terms of their agreement, CCCC will conduct a feasibility study and a compile a development plan and, following an approval, CCCC would undertake final design and construction, to include cranes and gantries, reported Maritime Executive, Fort Lauderdale.

The planned box terminal at Canada's Port of Sydney would have a wharf of 1,600 metres in length and draft of 16.5 metres to accommodate vessels of 19,000 TEU. In the first phase of development the terminal would have an annual handling capacity of 750,000 TEU, to be expanded to 1.5 million TEU in the second phase.

CCCC vice president, Chang Yunbo, said that the company "views Sydney's deepwater harbour as a potential game-changer for the North American eastern seaboard".

The partners intend to leverage Canada's free trade agreements with Europe and America and Canada-US rail links to make east coast markets accessible to operators of 14,000+ TEU containerships.

Proximity to the Northwest Passage over Canada, which may open for commercial traffic as sea ice becomes less prevalent, and the opening of the new Panama Canal expansion are also cited as factors for the terminal's development.
