Dubai's Jebel Ali terminal will have off-dock gantry crane controls
ZURICH's ABB, a leading power and automation technology group, is to deliver extensive remote control devices to Dubai's Jebel Ali container terminal - so remote that crane operators will no longer work in the terminal area.
"This concept simplifies the security procedures for crane operators since they can reach their control stations without going through security required for entering the terminal," said ABB Ports vice president Fred Hoonaard.
He added that "in spite of the increased distance, remote operation is performed safely".
ABB is to provide automation and remote control solutions for 13 ship-to-shore cranes and 35 automatic stacking cranes at DP World's US$1.6 billion Terminal 4 now under construction at Jebel Ali port in Dubai.
T4 will have a capacity of 3.1 million TEU when the first phase of development is completed in 2018.
Once the fourth terminal starts operation, the port will have 22.1 million TEU total capacity. By that time, it will be equipped with at least 110 cranes and feature a total quay length of 11,000 metres.
Despite the operation concept of Terminal 4 being similar to that of DP World's Terminal 3, the new terminal represents a step forwards in terms of remote crane operation from a control room located away from the quay, reported London's Container Management.
Said Mr Hoonaard: "DP World's new concept of placing the control room within the port area but outside the terminal with increased distance between the cranes and the control room, are what we see as the next level in remote operation."
The new terminal will be located on a reclaimed island on the north of the existing Terminal 2. A bridge providing access to the island from land near Terminal 2 is also being built as part of the plan, with work scheduled to get the 3,000 metre causeway and bridge partially open to traffic by the end of 2015.
