Nigerian pirates free 5 Polish crew after attacking geared 10,000-dwt ship
PIRATES have released five captive crew after attacking the Polish-owned 10,000-dwt Cypriot-flagged Szafir off the Nigerian coast, Reuters reports.
The geared general cargo ship Szafir was boarded overnight by armed men in two boats, who looted the ship, said operator EuroAfrica.
The kidnapped sailors also included officers, which made the ship impossible to navigate. "The rest of the crew, 11 people, stayed with the ship.
The ship was anchored 30 nautical miles (56 kilometres) off the Nigerian coast, and the operator was arranging for a new crew to take it back to port.
News of the release and that they were flying back to Poland came in a statement from Poland's Prime Minister Beata Szydloy.
"Everything ended happily. The sailors are safe and sound, we are glad that they are coming back to their families," said Ms Szydlo, revealing nothing about ransom paid if any.
Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski thanked Nigerian authorities and the operator of the vessel, EuroAfrica, for their co-operation in efforts to free the crew.
