Containerised US dairy cows go to Vietnam to provide milk for children

THE Port of Olympia expects it will move 1,400 head of dairy cattle in humane containers to Vietnam aboard the 1,859-dwt Falconia, a specialised animal-carrier.

Vietnam has launched a campaign geared toward minimising childhood malnourishment through a strategy of providing "one glass of milk per child per day" and have followed the example of other countries by importing dairy cattle.

The heifers originally from the east coast will first stop for a 28-day quarantine at a US Department of Agriculture approved farm facility. There, veterinarians will observe the condition of the animals before loading.

Following the USDA holding period, the heifers will be loaded, boarding by a specialised platform and gangway that keeps any hoof from touching the dock. Loading is expected to take two days.

The ship will make for Vietnam on a three-week voyage via calmer seas to the south with a veterinarian on board to ensure the cattle receive the best treatment.

The USDA has vetted all parts of this supply chain to ensure the most humane handling of the animals.
