Main Panama contractor says lock reinforcement to be done in January
THE Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has been informed by Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC), the main contractor for canal expansion, that work to reinforce the sills in the new locks will be completed in January.
GUPC will also conduct in-depth inspections and reinforcement of each individual sill. Afterward, GUPC plans to continue the electromechanical testing on the filling and emptying systems of the new locks.
The ACP was also informed by GUPC that they have not yet identified a date for the completion of the new locks project. But GUPC announced that they will implement a strategy that will help reduce the impact on the delivery date.
The Panama Canal Expansion Programme is 95 per cent complete, says the canal authority. The ACP continues to monitor GUPC's progress and will communicate updates as more information is available.
ACP also announced that the current wait times experienced by transiting ships have returned to normal operating levels because of measures taken and improving weather.
Down 80 per cent from highs in October, the wait time for transiting ships is now two days or less. Moreover, the number of ships awaiting transit is down 67 per cent from recent highs.
