Taiwan lobby shelves free trade zone campaign amid anti-China sentiment

LOBBY group Taiwan Glory that promotes unfettered Chinese investment in a free trade deal with a small Taiwanese offshore island, has ended its campaign as anti-China sentiment grows.

"We're giving up on our [local referendum] proposal," Taiwan Glory founder Loh Hong-bing told Reuters. "The Kinmen government has set up obstacles to stop it from happening."

Chinese President Xi Jinping recently met Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou, in the first meeting between leaders of the two sides since China's civil war ended in 1949.

The result did not change expectations that the pro-China ruling Kuomintang (KMT) is expected to be defeated in coming elections.

Mr Loh sought to establish a free trade zone on the tiny Kinmen island, formerly Quemoy, once the site of artillery duels but now a mainlander tourist destination a half-hour ferry ride away.

"Nothing, absolutely nothing, can get done since the student movement in 2014," said Mr Loh, referring to the Sunflower Movement protests, led by youths angry at perceived growing economic dominance by China, which sank a proposed trade pact between the two sides.
