Number of idle box ships surges by 52pc in November from October, says Drewry

THE number of idle containerships globally rose by 52 per cent in November compared to October for a total idle capacity of 900,000 TEU, according to data released by Drewry.

This corresponds to five per cent of the global fleet, and represents the highest level of unemployed vessels since the beginning of 2010, reported ShippingWatch of Denmark.

Among the ships taken out of service in November are 31 vessels with a capacity of 8,000 TEU or more, reports Drewry.

Despite the number of weekly sailings between Asia and North Europe in the fourth quarter being cut by 3.8 strings, the actual reduction in capacity is just one per cent higher than it was in the same period in 2014.
