Russia's new deepwater port of Bronka is equipped to open soon

THE new port of Bronka located on the outskirts of St. Petersburg, Russia, is to be officially opened soon following the installation of a Liebherr LHM 800 mobile port crane at the end of September, and the completion of the technical plant and equipment for the first stage of operating Bronka's port facilities.

The multi-functional cargo handling facility comprises two terminals plus a logistics centre. In the first phase of development the container terminal has a capacity of 1.45 million TEU, five berths along quays extending 1,200 metres with a depth alongside of 14.4 metres. The ro-ro terminal has a quay length of 710 metres and capacity to handle 260,000 units annually.

With a lifting capacity of up to 308 tonnes and a boom range of up to 64 metres, the LHM 800 crane will be used at both the container and ro-ro terminals for loading heavy cargo, a statement from port authorities said.

The cargo handling operation currently has four container gantry cranes and 10 rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes built by Konecranes of Finland. The cranes have a stacking height of one-over-five standard containers and lifting capacity of 50 tonnes beneath the spreader.

This equipment is complemented during the first stage of the port's development by 25 terminal tractors with a capacity of up to 36 tonnes, 25 roll-trailers, two empty container stackers, two reach stackers for use on rail tracks and for the ro-ro terminal, and a Konecranes SMV Loader with a lifting capacity of 33 tonnes.

Two rail sidings 535 metres in length are available at the terminal site. Work has been completed on the tracks linking the port of Bronka with the yard and the Russian rail network. The extension of Bronka Marshalling Yard will be completed at the end of December.
