HKIA sees growth in airfreight for second consecutive month

HONG Kong International Airport (HKIA) handled 392,000 tonnes of cargo in October, a rise of 2.0 per cent over the same month last year, marking the second consecutive month of growth at HKIA.

The airport said in a statement that the cargo increase was mainly due to imports, which were up 4 per cent from one year ago. Exports and transshipments grew 1 and 2 per cent respectively year over year. Among the key trading regions, traffic to and from Europe, Australasia and North America increased most significantly.

Since the beginning of the year, HKIA handled 3.58 million tonnes of cargo, a slight increase of 0.4 per cent over the same period last year. On a rolling 12-month period, the airport handled 4.39 million tonnes of cargo, a rise of 1.1 per cent over 2014.

HKIA handled nearly 4.42 tonnes of total cargo in 2014, which was a 6 per cent increase over 2013.

There were also increases in passenger volume and flight movements. Passenger volume rose by 7.7 percent to 5.8 million, while flight movements increased by 3.5 per cent to 34,810.
